Government promises almost £300 million to gear up for new walking, wheeling and cycling schemes

The funding package, announced 12th February 2025, by the government and Active Travel England (ATE) will also allow the construction of improved crossings and junctions to make walking, wheeling and cycling easier, safer and better across the country

In November 2023, the last government announced a plan to invest £5.5 billion over the next 11 years to improve local roads across the country. This funding was intended to address potholes, resurface roads, and improve overall road maintenance.  Rishi Sunak’s government also promised measures such as the “Pothole Fund” and “Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme” to help local authorities manage and improve their road networks.

It remains to be seen whether the current government will invest in our roads and whilst we applaud any initiative to encourage wheeling and walking, we can not ignore the amount of pothole damage that we see on a daily basis throughout all of our branches.

The government’s focus on active travel initiatives, such as walking and cycling schemes, is not necessarily at odds with addressing road conditions. In fact, some argue that encouraging active travel can help reduce traffic congestion and wear and tear on roads, ultimately contributing to their long-term maintenance.

Addressing the state of the roads is an ongoing challenge that requires sustained effort and investment. While the government has taken some steps in this direction, it’s crucial to continue monitoring progress and ensure that the allocated resources are used effectively to deliver tangible improvements for road users.
