The Shocking Reality: 100% Non-Compliance
If you think the risks are overstated, recent official findings tell a very different story.
A Trading Standards investigation in 2025 tested 30 tyres sourced across three part worn tyre retailers. The results were staggering: 100% of the tyres tested failed to comply with the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations.
Every single tyre inspected posed a risk to road safety. Among the common defects discovered were:
- Screws embedded in the tread
- Deep tears and cuts in the sidewalls
- Severely degraded rubber providing minimal grip
- Exposed structural metal cords
Fitting tyres with defects like these vastly increases the risk of sudden blowouts, aquaplaning, and catastrophic failure at speed.
A False Economy
While a part worn tyre might cost less on day one, it rarely saves money in the long run. A new budget tyre typically comes with around 8mm of fresh tread depth, offering maximum grip, water clearance, and longevity. A part worn tyre often arrives with 3mm to 4mm of remaining tread, meaning you are paying half the price for a fraction of the usable lifespan, on top of unknown safety risks.
