As ambient temperatures rise, the pressure inside your tyres naturally increases, typically by roughly 1 to 2 PSI for every 10°C rise in temperature. Friction from high-speed motorway driving on hot asphalt heats the air inside even further.
How to manage warm-weather pressure:
- Always check pressures when tyres are cold: Check first thing in the morning or after the car has been parked for at least two hours. If you check hot tyres after driving, you will get a falsely high reading. (our technicians are experienced in factoring this in, when necessary)
- Never bleed out pressure from hot tyres: If a hot tyre reads higher than your recommended PSI, leave it alone. The manufacturer accounts for pressure increases while driving. Bleeding air out of a hot tyre leaves it under-inflated once it cools back down.
- Adjust before summer road trips: Heavy loads (passengers and luggage) require higher pressures. Check your owner’s manual or door jamb sticker for fully laden pressure specs before setting off.
