What’s a TWI?

Tread Wear Indicator

Why is it useful to have a TWI on my tyre?

The TWI is a tread wear indicator. It is often represented in the tread of the tyre by one or more small rubber crossbars, though different manufacturers have different style indicators.

The TWI does not replace the tread depth measurement, but it is intended to indicate to every vehicle owner that the tyre is absolutely worn out if the surrounding tread is on the same level as the TWI.

If your TWI is at the same level as the bottom of the tyre, the tyre does not have enough tread for a secure grip and must be replaced immediately.

The minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm for passenger car, van and 4×4 tyres, though we recommend replacing at 3mm for a better grip and safer stopping distances.

We are always happy to carry out regular safety checks on your tyres at our branches in Sudbury, Haverhill, Diss, Saffron Walden, Bury st Edmunds, and Stowmarket.
