July 20, 2021Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R – Tyre Review
On the lookout for the ultimate racetrack tyre? If so, then Treadfirst has the perfect solution for you.
For many years the Michelin Cup tyre has been renowned for being the go-to tyre when it comes to peak performance out on track, helping drivers get the very best out of their car in all types of motorsport.
Best known for helping drivers gain lap times in both the wet and the dry, the tyre has become a firm favourite among drivers for well over a decade and the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is the latest incarnation of this iconic tyre.
The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R can regularly be found on some of the world’s most popular sports cars including: Ferrari 458 Speciale, BMW M4 GTS, Corvette Grand Sport, Porsche 918 Spyder and Porsche 911 GT3.
Recently, Michelin was called upon to create a new enhanced, ultra-sticky performance tread compound. In this article, we’ll explore how the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R was created and the benefits it can bring.
How was the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R created?
Unlike the first variation of the Pilot Sport Cup tyre, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R was designed to flourish specifically in dry track conditions. In order to achieve this, the manufacturers recreated the ‘go fast’ compounds that you’d typically see in sports cars that win the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, as one of the tyres’ main characteristics.
As well as this, the circumferential grooves on the tyre are closer together than you’d typically expect which helps with grip. There are also fewer tread blocks on the tyre which makes it closer to a standard racing slick tyre, thus making your driving much more precise when zipping around a racetrack at high speeds.
All of these small developments play a huge role in making the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R one of the best performance tyres around with the brand predicting that in dry conditions cars will save around 0.5 seconds per kilometre.
What records has the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup R broken?
So, we know that the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup R is designed to help supercars save speed in dry conditions. But do they actually?
Well, since it was introduced, the tyre has been fitted to the Porsche 911 GT2 RS for a number of motorsport events. At the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta event, the car recorded a lap time of 1:24:88 – a new production record. At Road America, the car also smashed the production record with this tyre with a lap time of 2:15:17.
As well as this, the Porsche GT3 RS has excelled away from specific events including achieving the fastest possible time around Germany’s famous Nurburgring circuit (visit the link below).

A whole host of other iconic car brands have also adopted the tyre including Ferrari and Corvette and look set to hit the racetracks in the near future.
