June 29, 2021The Iconic Goodyear Blimp Returns to London

After almost a decade away from British skies, the iconic Goodyear blimp has made a return to the UK this weekend.

The chances are you’ve become used to seeing the famous blue and yellow blimp dominating the skyline of many American sporting events, but it’s been many years since the famous aircraft has visited these shores.

On the 26th June, the blimp delighted motorsport fans at Brands Hatch Circuit during the Kwik British Touring Car Championship. Prior to the race, the blimp was sighted over Dover, Maidstone and Dartford.

Next on the blimp’s schedule is London, where residents of the capital will be given the rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the icon in person. The blimp will arrive in London on Tuesday 29th June and will stay until Wednesday 30th, so if you want to see it you only have a short time to do so.

After many years away, 2020 saw the blimp return to Europe starting at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race before travelling across France, Germany and Belgium, visiting a number of famous motorsport races along the way.

The blimp has a long association with tyres, with Goodyear remaining Formula 1’s most successful tyre manufacturer.

Since the 1910s the blimp has acted as the manufacturer’s most famous ambassador, causing a stir wherever it goes. The current iteration of the blimp, known as the Goodyear Wingfoot One, was created in 2013 with Goodyear working alongside technicians and engineers at Germany’s ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik. It was then shipped to the USA where it has become a regular feature at sporting events including NASCAR races, NBA games and PGA golf tournaments.

This isn’t the first time the blimp has visited the UK, with its maiden British flight taking place in 1972. From here, it’s appeared at a number of world-renowned sporting and cultural events including the 1980 FA Cup final, Live Aid and royal weddings.
