July 21, 2021Record Prices Paid for Classic Tractors in Essex

An Essex auction saw record prices paid for some classic tractors this month, with collectors coming from across the country and the world to try and get their hands on one of the iconic models on offer.

Cheffins Tractor Bannr - Treadfirst

Taking place in Bishop’s Stortford as part of Essex’s Shrubbs Farm Collection, East Anglian auctioneers Cheffins oversaw the event at which more than 90 classic and vintage tractors were sold.

Undoubtedly the most significant sale of the day was a 1983 County 1474 ‘short nose’. With only 100 hours on the clock and two previous owners, the tractor was purchased for an astonishing £210,112, making it the second-highest paid price ever for a classic or vintage tractor at auction. Purchased by a UK collector, prior to the auction its estimated value was between £60,000 to £70,000, showing just how popular this particular piece proved to be.

As well as this tractor, a whole host of other pieces raised eyebrows as they were sold for well above what they were originally valued, including:

  • A rare 1966 Northrop 500/46 for £79,864
  • 1965 Doe-130 for £49,312
  • 1989 Ford 7810 Silver Jubilee for £45,024
  • 1975 Ford 7000 for £34,840
  • Roadless Ploughmaster for £28,944
  • 1991 Ford 8830 for £28,944
  • 1978 Massey Ferguson for £27,872
  • 1977 Roadless 120 for £26,800
  • Roadless Ploughmaster 95 for £23,584
Cheffins’ Director, Oliver Godfrey

This event was one of the largest of its kind since the start of the pandemic and with lockdown restrictions easing across the UK, people came from far and wide to attend the event. This even included collectors and enthusiasts from Europe and the USA.

Cheffins’ director, Oliver Godfrey, was delighted with the turnout and said: “What unfolded was nothing short of spectacular. With collectors and enthusiasts emerging from the darkness of various lockdowns and armed with fresh enthusiasm and cash, they were eager to feed their passion for all things classic and vintage.”

The next classic and vintage tractor auction will take place in Ely on 24 July at Cheffins Saleground:
