From getting directions to accessing traffic information, these apps are a driver’s best friend.

Speed traps, roadworks, getting lost, finding petrol stations … taking full advantage of your smartphone’s constant connectivity will help you avoid the daily irritation being on the road can bring.

There are a huge number of vehicle-related apps available. Not only can iPhone owners get directions on their handset from navigation apps, but they can even access the latest traffic information and even find out how economical their driving is.

So for when the going gets tough here’s our pick of the FREE apps that will be your in-car best friend!

RAC Traffic

Keeping you up to date on the road ahead. Incidents, delays and roadworks across the UK are displayed on a Google Map. You can view by region or your current location and zoom in for more details on the incident that may affect your travel plans.

Green Flag Rescue Me

There’s nothing worse than breaking down and not being able to tell your recovery service your exact location. However this free app not only pinpoints your location, but you can also access expert driving tips and set alerts that will notify when your tax and MOT is due.

NavFree GPS UK & ROI

This free app offers turn-by-turn navigation through audio and on-screen instructions, along with offline map access and live search from Google and Bing. The maps are provided by – a huge resource of free maps updated by its 250,000 users.

AA Eco-Drive

The AA designed this app to measure how economically you drive your vehicle as opposed to how economical your vehicle is. Simply launch the app and select your vehicle, then place the phone securely on your dash and start driving to get a rating. This free app also offers tips on how to drive more fuel efficiently and lets you see how much money your eco-driving is really saving you.

Theory Driving Test UK 2013 – FREE

Whether you’ve only just received your provisional licence and studying for your theory tests or a seasoned driver that just wants a quick refresher, this free app helps you learn about the subjects covered in this year’s DVLA theory test and then even test yourself. Updated annually.


This cheeky app tells you your current speed and the speed limit on the road you are travelling on in case you forgot. It also alerts you to the location of speed cameras and calming in the area you are driving in.

Interesting App Developments MotorMate

The insurance comparison site has launched an app that rates your driving. This free app called MotorMate, allows your mobile phone to monitor your driving style and rewards good driving! Other insurers including Aviva are creating similar tools.  Enquire with your own insurance company to see what they offer.
And a final note of caution: DO NOT use your mobile phone whilst driving. It has been illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving since December 2003. Figures published in 2011 showed that using a mobile phone while driving contributed to 374 road casualties.

The law was amended in August 2013 and using a mobile phone whilst driving now carries an Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notice of £100.
