November 24, 2021Book Your MOT Today to Avoid The Christmas Peak

Typically, Christmas is a quieter period when it comes to MOTs. With many people counting the pennies a little more closely at this time of year, usually, the number of motorists looking to get an MOT is lower than in other months.

However, all of that was thrown into chaos in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the industry in a way that has never been seen before.

A combination of lockdown and the government’s deployment of a six month MOT extension meant that more cars than ever were looking to have their MOT during the festive season. In fact, in June 2020 700,000 fewer cars had an MOT compared to the same month in 2019. Add to the fact that garages were considered essential services during 2020’s winter lockdown, all of these factors contributed to a Christmas boom of MOTs.

As we edge ever closer to Christmas this year, the team at Treadfirst has taken a look at what may be in store for the industry.

Can I still make use of the MOT extension scheme?

In order to cope with the demand last year, the government introduced an MOT extension scheme. Due to lockdown restrictions, many garages were closed and unable to perform MOTs, so the government allowed drivers to apply for a six-month extension. Overall, it’s predicted that around 10 million cars made use of the scheme.

The extension expired last August, with MOTs on the final cars who were granted it taking place at the start of 2021. This means that no vehicles in the country will be able to use it this time around, making it all the more important to get your MOT booked in as early as possible.

How will last year’s MOT Christmas peak impact 2021?

While it’s difficult to say for certain, last year’s Christmas peak has given us a bit of an indication of what we may expect this time around. The aforementioned MOT extension is likely to have a knock-on effect on this Christmas, too.

This is because all of those cars that benefited from the extension in 2020 and experienced that Christmas peak, will have their MOT certificates up for renewal at the same time in 2021. MOTs must be done annually, meaning a lot of those vehicles will require MOTs at the same time. It’s likely that repeat bookings will already have been made, so if you also need an MOT during this busy period, it’s important to book it in early.

According to a study conducted by, 93% of garages are preparing for a busier than usual Christmas and are planning on staying open across the festive period (other than Christmas Day and Boxing Day).

If you’re unable to get your MOT booked in, you could be left without a roadworthy vehicle. MOTs must be done every year and if your previous certificate has expired, your car cannot be driven until it’s passed a new MOT test. It’s illegal to drive without an MOT and anyone that is caught doing so will face a hefty fine, points on their licence and even the possibility of being disqualified from driving. Plus, if you’re involved in an accident, you won’t be covered by insurance.
