July 14, 2015Has your car had its Safety Recall? Check with new online tool

Thanks to a new online tool, it is now easier than ever to check whether or not your car has had it’s safety recall. The Vehicle Safety Recall Service, developed in a collaboration between the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and Motor Codes – a body backed by the government for motor industry regulation – is designed to improve safety standards on the roads further still.

The tool works by keeping track of vehicles’ safety recalls, allowing car buyers to check if the car they are buying has any. As well as this, the service will direct motorists to their nearest dealers in instances where the car in question should require remedial work.

These tests will aid existent safety practice and regulations, namely the existing VOSA service. The Chief Executive for SMMT, Mike Hawes, states the merit of these online tools, noting how easy it is for essential recalls to be missed “when a vehicle transfers between owners” and how the portal “provides a fast way of checking any safety issues”.

Not only does this service hold considerable merit in the field of vehicle safety, but it is itself extremely easy to use, making it even more appealing to users. The search is incredibly quick, with a collection of simple steps as follows:

1. select the manufacturer of your vehicle

2. input the vehicle identification number (VIN – can be located on your vehicle’s V5 certificate or on the bottom of the vehicle’s windscreen)

Once these steps have been completed, this service – unlike the VOSA search – will look specifically at your vehicle as opposed to simply checking against vehicles which match the criteria of the manufacturer and model. This makes the test more comprehensive, so despite some manufacturers running their own recall search tools, this is far preferable both for individual drivers and the UK’s road safety industry as a whole.

The addition of this online tool to our motoring industry adds to the already flourishing record of the UK for their safety recalls. Boasting one of the best records in the world for safety recalls, the UK benefits from over 90 per cent of their vehicles being repaired following these recall campaigns.

Though closing the gap to 100 per cent success rates, the industry is certainly making the right move with advances in technology and online tools like this one, with the new service forecast to mitigate up to 8 per cent of that gap, with the hope that one day the industry can have the entirety of the 36 million cars and vans on our roads benefitting from recall checks thanks to this handy online tool.
